The Story of Steeprock
Steeprock has soul. Built by a true renaissance man, Glen Harcourt, that which seemed impossible became Steeprock.
Glen saw possibility where others didn’t and did what it took to make things work. In 1990, Glen purchased 70 rugged acres of Colorado cliffside property, a chunk of earth that rose 900 vertical feet over the span 1-mile. A piece of land that made others shy inspired Glen with its potential.
He built the impossible driveway by hand and after he arrived at the top, he set out to create Steeprock. Glen had a background in engineering but had a passion for green building and alternative energy technologies. He built Steeprock as a dedication to this passion. It was an off-grid, self sufficient experimental example of his vision. It was his experiment, a space to test ideas and try concepts. From there he built his business from the ground up and created his highly sought after Steeprock Building company, building built numerous, significant, off-grid homes in the region. From humble beginnings as a one-man company he grew to employ 28 craftsmen and artisans from all trades, many of whom lived and worked at Steeprock. The space in imbued with their essence, a sense of community, their ideas explored and expanded upon.
After your journey up Glen’s incredible driveway you arrive on a small level platform and Steeprock rises from the cliffs, towering three stories above you, but not teetering. Instead, it is firmly planted in the rock as if to say, “I belong here and have been here forever.”
Steeprock is now run by Glen’s family and is kept in service to all who visit as an homage to his beautiful vision and all that he created inspired during his time here.
